Despite this past year being a challenging year for Canadian dividend-paying equities with increased competition from rising interest rates and bond yields, our clients experienced strong performance this past quarter, leading to an overall rise in return for the full year.
Now, with a more favourable fundamental backdrop, the dividend-paying equities sector of the market has several catalysts. Not only do we expect dividend-paying equities to be the beneficiary of lower interest rates, but we also expect them to remain less volatile than the remainder of the market.
Looking at 2024, inflation appears to be coming under control and administered interest rates should be at their peak. However, with current macroeconomic events and the uncertainty of the timing of rate cuts, 2024 could prove to be more challenging than many investors expect.
